# Which Suit Holds Both Extremes? An Interrogative Note on Assigning Four Suits to Eight Addresses

## Abstract

AH-PAPER-1 proved that a hand-fixed validity grading over the eight three-bit addresses was derivable all along: the table was a theorem wearing the clothes of an axiom. This note asks the successor question from the opposite bank. A second working system — a card system of four suits, each with an *empty* and a *full* pole, eight suit-pole combinations in all — must now be assigned to the eight addresses, on the stated design principle that *the lattice determines and the card system adapts*. How much of the assignment does the lattice actually determine? We show (Proposition 1) that a single complementarity axiom forces the two extreme addresses, 000 and 111, into the same suit: fully-empty and fully-full are one suit's two faces, not two suits' characters. We show (Proposition 2) that the lattice determines nothing further: which suit takes which complement pair is a free choice among 4! orderings, invisible to every predicate of the system of record. The remainder of the note is therefore written in the interrogative mood — four questions, one per suit, each with the evidence we hold and the conditions under which we would call it answered. The mathematics closes one degree of freedom; the questions are what is left, stated precisely.

## 1. The Question Inherited

AH-PAPER-1 recorded an uncanny event: a grading assigned by judgment turned out to be a two-predicate theorem, and the informal tier descriptions turned out to be the defining conditions, written years early. Its conjecture asks whether that reading survives a larger space.

This note inherits a smaller, sharper situation. The Adaptor House trope corpus — public at tropes.adaptorhouse.com — organizes its records under four suits (*hourglass, star, mountain, heart*), each suit presenting two poles, one **empty** (○) and one **full** (●). Four suits by two poles is eight combinations, and the system of record has eight addresses. The design decision on precedence is explicit: the lattice determines; the card system adapts. An earlier rendering convention had called the empty pole "light"; measured against the lattice — where the mark, presence, force is the solid line — that convention inverts, and it is hereby read the lattice's way: **light belongs to fullness**.

So the assignment must exist. The interrogative question is: how much of it is *derivation*, and how much is *decree*? AH-PAPER-1 found a table that was secretly a theorem. Here we ask the converse: is this table a theorem at all, or does honesty require us to mark exactly where judgment re-enters?

## 2. Definitions

**Definition 1 (Address, grading).** As in AH-PAPER-1: an address is a triple a = (g, m, t) ∈ {0,1}³; V is the derived five-valued grading (*false, strong, limited, transcendent, true*).

**Definition 2 (Suit system).** A *suit system* is a set S of four suits and a bijection α : S × {empty, full} → {0,1}³ assigning each suit-pole combination a distinct address.

**Definition 3 (Polarity axiom P).** For every suit s, the full pole carries strictly more marks than the empty pole: |α(s, full)| > |α(s, empty)|, where |a| is the number of 1-bits. This is "light belongs to fullness," stated so a machine can check it.

**Definition 4 (Complementarity axiom C).** For every suit s, α(s, full) = ¬α(s, empty) — a suit's two poles are bitwise complements: the same figure, inked and blank.

## 3. What the Lattice Determines

**Proposition 1 (Co-location of extremes).** Under axiom C, the addresses 000 and 111 are assigned to the same suit.

**Proof.** ¬(000) = 111. Under C the pole-partner of whichever suit-pole receives 000 receives 111. ∎

**Corollary.** Under C, no suit is "fully yin" and no other suit "fully yang." The extremes are one suit's two poles. The complement pairs are forced: {000, 111}, {001, 110}, {010, 101}, {011, 100} — and axiom P then orients every pair without further choice, since complements always differ in mark count when n is odd: the fuller member is the full pole.

**Proposition 2 (The lattice stops there).** The suits-to-pairs assignment is not determined: all 4! = 24 bijections from S to the four complement pairs satisfy C and P, and no predicate definable from address structure alone (in the signature of the system of record) distinguishes among them.

**Proof sketch.** C and P constrain only the internal structure of each pair, which is identical across the 24 candidates. The suits themselves do not occur in the signature; any formula over addresses is invariant under relabeling the suits. ∎

**Remark on C itself.** Proposition 1 is only as good as axiom C, and C is a design commitment, not a theorem: one *could* pair non-complementary addresses under P alone (P alone admits pairings such as {000, 011} with {100, 111}). We adopt C because a pole is the same figure with the ink reversed — the outline and the fill of one card — and because the alternative would let a suit's two faces disagree about which lines exist rather than about whether they are marked. But we log it the way AH-PAPER-1 logged its ground asymmetry: as a premise whose status — design truth or convenience — a challenger is invited to attack. That is **Question 0**.

## 4. The Four Questions

The mathematics has closed what it can. What follows is evidence, not proof, drawn from the public corpus (record names and suit-pole placements are Reader-visible surface; nothing below reaches into any gated stratum). Grades in brackets are V from AH-PAPER-1.

**Question 1 — Is heart the extremal suit?** Does heart take {000, 111}: full heart at 111 (*Aligned Frame* [true]), empty heart at 000 (*Shattered Foundation* [false])? The corpus witnesses: the heart records *Fully Invested* and *Trust Pays Off* sit naturally at "every distinction made and held," while *It Was Never Going to Work Out* and *Mutual Destruction* are near-paraphrases of "origin collapse; no structure to recurse on." If any suit spans true to false — the only suit that can, by Proposition 1 — the corpus says it is the suit of investment and its withdrawal.

**Question 2 — Is star the mirror pair?** Does star take {010, 101}: full star at 101 (*Radiant Mirror* [transcendent], "marks at both faces, absence at the heart"), empty star at 010 (*Memory Abyss* [strong], "power held in the middle, unseen at either face")? The corpus placed *Illuminating Star* and *Dark Star* before any of this was asked; a dark star as power unseen at either face is either evidence or coincidence, and the question is which.

**Question 3 — Is hourglass the volatile pair?** Does hourglass take {011, 100}: full hourglass at 011 (*Phase Shift* [strong], "transformation through exposure"), empty hourglass at 100 (*Disruptive Spark* [false], "force at the root with nothing above to carry it")? Hourglass is the corpus's suit of time; *Ordered Time* against *Chaos Hour* is its own pole pair, and "volatility with nothing above to carry it" is a fair formal paraphrase of a chaos hour. Note what answering yes concedes: the empty pole of hourglass would be the *other* false address — the suit of time would share a verdict, not a structure, with the empty heart.

**Question 4 — Is mountain the remaining pair, and is a glyph admissible evidence?** By elimination, mountain would take {001, 110}: empty mountain at 001 (*First Stillness* [strong], "the first mark appears at the surface"), full mountain at 110 (*Constructed Surface* [limited], "an aesthetic finish over structure"). Here the note must flag its own temptation. The render glyph at 001 is ☶ — the classical mountain. The system of record's doctrine is explicit that glyphs are render artifacts, never reasoning tokens; deleting every glyph loses no information. So: **may a render-layer coincidence be cited as evidence for a data-layer assignment?** We believe the doctrinally clean answer is no — and we record that the elimination argument needs no help: if Questions 1–3 are answered yes, Question 4's assignment is forced regardless of what anyone printed on the card.

## 5. Answer Conditions

Stated in the manner of AH-PAPER-1's refutation conditions, so that the questions can actually close:

1. **By decree.** The author of record decides the assignment; the decision is logged, versioned, and binding on the corpus. Questions answered this way are marked *decided*, not *derived* — the distinction this note exists to keep visible.
2. **By corpus contradiction.** Exhibit a public record whose suit-pole placement, under the proposed assignment, contradicts its own content more severely than under some alternative among the 24. This refutes the evidence, not the axioms.
3. **By breaking C.** Exhibit a principled reading of the card system under which a suit's two poles are not complements (Question 0). This dissolves Proposition 1 and reopens the extremes.
4. **By breaking P.** Show that "light belongs to fullness" misreads the lattice's own semantics of mark and absence. We consider this the least likely door, since P is copied off the system of record's Level-1 bindings, but a door is a door.

## 6. Author's Position

Held as belief, not theorem. I believe the assignment of §4 is correct in all four cases, and I notice that this belief was purchased cheaply: the corpus named its records years before the lattice was formalized, and when the eight combinations were laid against the eight addresses, the names again appeared to know something they had not been told. AH-PAPER-1 called this event uncanny once. Twice is a pattern demanding suspicion rather than celebration — eight cases fit many stories, which is precisely why this note is interrogative where its predecessor could be declarative. I believe heart holds both extremes; I will not write it into the system of record until it is decided or derived, and I undertake to mark, permanently, which of the two it was.
